Transfer Credit
Before Orientation If you transferred to CLA from
another institution, you were asked to forward transcripts of
coursework from your previous school(s) to the University of Minnesota.
Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate credits must also be
reported to the University of Minnesota by the testing service. The Office of Admissions
will evaluate your coursework for transferability of credit and for the
liberal education requirements. A summary of this evaluation is sent to
you prior to orientation/registration. If there are restrictions on a
specific course, or type of credit that may require further evaluation,
these are noted on the summary. Note: Keep copies of all your transfer
course descriptions, syllabi, and assignments in case you need to have
courses re-evaluated. At Orientation You will receive a Degree Audit that will show you what degree requirements
your transfer coursework fulfills, if any. Your adviser will help you
interpret these reports and will help you understand what requirements
you will need to complete. If you are exempt from any degree
requirements, the exemption will be noted on your degree audit. Some restrictions on credit transfer are: - Courses
that are in non-liberal arts fields, physical education, applied music,
or enrichment: the number of such credits that may apply to a degree is
limited (see your orientation adviser).
- Credits in your
proposed major may be subject to approval in the major though they
transfer as degree credit (see your orientation adviser).
- Courses
where credit is allowed only upon individual review and approval by
your CLA student community, CLA faculty, or the Office of Admissions.
Detailed course descriptions and materials will be required for review.
Such courses include:
- Some religion courses taken at nonpublic
schools. Provide course materials to the office of Admissions [240
Williamson Hall, 231 Pillsbury Drive SE, Minneapolis, MN 55454] for
review.
- Internship, fieldwork, or independent study courses (see your orientation adviser).
Exemptions: - Those
students who have completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum before
entering CLA are exempt from the diversified core, designated themes,
and the first-year composition requirements.
- Students who
have completed an associate in arts degree at a Minnesota community
college are exempt from the diversified core and first-year composition
requirements. (Four-year colleges that grant two-year A.A. degrees do
not qualify for this exemption.)
