Placement Testing
To help you begin coursework at the appropriate level, the university provides placement testing in math, chemistry, and second language. With your test results, your college adviser will be able to discuss with you during your Orientation where you can best begin coursework in these and related subjects. All placement testing needs to be done before you come to the University for Orientation.

Math placement testing
Nearly all freshmen are expected to take a math placement test. You do not need to take a math placement test if you have earned college credit in calculus.

Math placement testing FAQ Your username and password for the placement test are on your personal To-Do List. When you are ready, go to the placement testing web site.

Chemistry placement testing
Take the chemistry placement test if you are planning a science-based major or professional program, such as pre-medicine or pre-nursing. You do not need to take the chemistry test if any of the following statements is true:
  • You have not taken chemistry in high school
  • You have earned college credit in chemistry
Chemistry placement testing FAQ Your username and password for the placement test are on your personal To-Do List. When you are ready, go to the placement testing web site.

French, German and Spanish testing
Take an Entrance Proficiency Test (EPT) if you have completed 3 or more years of high school or 1 year of college study in French, German, or Spanish.

You must pass the EPT in order to register for French, German, and Spanish courses at the second year level (usually 1003-1004) or higher.

You do not need to take the EPT if any of the following statements is true:
  • You have studied French, German or Spanish for only 1-2 years (determine placement with your orientation adviser).
  • You have not started your study of French, German, or Spanish.
  • You have studied your language for 2 years in college or 5 or more years in high school plus a study abroad experience.
  • You passed the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE) through the College in the Schools program.
  • You plan to study a language other than French, German or Spanish to fulfill your second language requirement.
  • You are exempt from the requirement.
Entrance proficiency testing FAQ Use your University Internet ID and password to access the test. When you are ready, go to the entrance proficiency test site.

See information on second language requirement.
