French, German and Spanish testing FAQWhy should I take an entrance proficiency test? Meeting the CLA second language requirement is required of all students completing the bachelor of arts, bachelor of fine arts, and bachelor of individualized studies degrees.
You must pass the entrance proficiency test in order to register for French, German, or Spanish courses at the second year level (usually 1003-1004) or higher. You do not need to take the entrance proficiency test if any of the following are true:
- You have not started your study of French, German, or Spanish
- You have studied French, German or Spanish for only 1-2 years (determine course placement with your orientation adviser)
- You have studied your language for 2 years in college or 5 or more years in high school plus a study abroad experience.
- You passed the Graduation Proficiency Test or Language Proficiency Exam through the College in the Schools program
- You plan to study a language other than French, German or Spanish to fulfill your second language requirement.
- You are exempt from the second language requirement
How do I take the test? Go to the entrance proficiency test website and log in. You will need your University of Minnesota Internet ID and password. If you have not initialized your account, you can do so at the testing login page (click Student Internet Account Initiation - remember the password you choose: you will need it to register for classes).
If you achieve a satisfactory score on the reading and listening tests on the web, sign up for the in-person writing test on the web.
How long does the test take? The web entrance proficiency test includes sections on reading and listening. Each section takes about an hour. You can take the tests at separate times. The in-person writing test also takes about an hour.
Will I get credit from the entrance proficiency test? No, entrance proficiency tests are not for credit. Their purpose is to help you and your adviser decide at what level of language study you should begin, so you are not wasting time and money in the wrong course.
How do I fulfill the second language requirement? You may fulfill the second language requirement, in two ways:
- Completion of fourth-semester college course with a grade of C-, S, or better at University of Minnesota or equivalent course to demonstrate functional language proficiency.
- Certified proficiency, demonstrated by passing the Language Proficiency Exam (LPE). This examination usually tests writing, speaking, reading, and listening skills at a level usually attained after four semesters of study.
