Chemistry placement testing FAQ Why should I take a chemistry placement test? All physical and biological science majors build on college-level chemistry. You should take the test if you studied chemistry in high school and are interested in physical or biological science majors or health science professional programs such as pre-medicine or pre-nursing. You do not need to take the chemistry placement test if any of the following statements is true: - You have not taken chemistry in high school
- You have earned college credit in chemistry
- You don't plan to take college chemistry
How do I take the test? Go to the placement test web site and log in. If you are a new student, your user name and password is on your personal To-Do list . Other students may call the CLA Student Information Office, (612) 625-2020 to be assigned a username and password. The test site includes a practice test-check it out before you begin.
May I use a calculator while taking the test? Yes, calculators are allowed, if desired.
How long does the test take? Arrange for 45 minutes of undisturbed time online-the test is timed.
Will I get credit from the placement test? No, placement tests are not for credit. Their purpose is to help you and your adviser decide at what level of chemistry you should begin, so you are not wasting time and money in the wrong course. I took Advanced Placement courses in high school. Do I still need to take the placement test? Take the chemistry placement test if you have not yet received your score on the Advanced Placement exam. If you have received your score, check the Advanced Placement Course Awards to see if you will receive college credit.
