Welcome New Students!

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, welcome to your new community.

First we congratulate you on accepting your admittance. You have taken your first step towards an exciting and successful future.

We want to do everything we can to assist you in your transition to the U. To do so we have developed a personal, online To-Do List and an information-packed Orientation & Registration program for you. Your To-Do List will guide you through the steps you need to take to prepare for Orientation and track your progress for you.

  • Tell us about yourself in a brief questionnaire
  • Sign up for an orientation date
  • Take online placement tests in math, chemisty, French, German, or Spanish
  • Learn about opportunities for new students and get ready to register at orientation.

Watch the mail for more information about using your personal To-Do List.

Orientation

First-year students: Orientation is a full two-day (one day for spring admits) introduction to the University of Minnesota and the College of Liberal Arts. You will meet other first year students with interests similar to yours and learn about degree requirements and opportunities in the College of Liberal Arts and the University of Minnesota. You will meet individually with your academic adviser and register for classes.

Transfer students: Orientation is a combined online and on-campus program for experienced students designed to provide you with the information and support you need to succeed at the University of Minnesota. The Online Orientation will introduce resources and opportunities at the University and help you prepare for your on-campus orientation, where you will meet  your CLA academic adviser and register for classes.

Intra-campus students: Orientation is a 90 minute small group transfer advising meeting especially for students who already know their way around campus and are familiar with University requirements. You will meet with a CLA adviser and receive an updated degree audit.

Visit the Orientation & First-Year Programs site or click on the links to the left for more information.

International students: In addition to your College of Liberal Arts orientation you must also attend an International Student Orientation Program.

Welcome Week
If you are a new freshman at the University of Minnesota your college experience will begin with Welcome Week, starting on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Welcome Week is a six-day, on-campus program designed to complement your orientation experience, provide opportunities to enhance your academic and personal success, and give you an edge in starting college. The second day of Welcome Week is College Day, during which you will learn about the college that will be your academic home for the next four years.

By the end of Welcome Week you will be ready to begin your first semester with all the tools needed to make the University of Minnesota and the College of Liberal Arts your own. Please visit the
Welcome Week site for more information.
